Turn away now, least your poor wallets be overflowing. You have been warned. Today we’re gonna take a look at some offerings from 3rd Party Transforming Robots company iGear, namely Spray, Hench, and UFO from the Mini Warriors line. iGear has been around for a number of years dealing mostly with high quality retoolings of existing items or accessories for other toys, but with their mini warriors line delve into fully new transforming robots. Based on the old G1 Mini Spies, this new line seeks to bring the classic designs more into modern stylings that will fit alongside your Classics/Generations collection. We’ll start with some generalizations of the line and then delve into a closer look at the individual bots. Packaging is pretty simple. Cardboard boxes with plastic tray inserts. Not the highest quality packaging I’ve seen, but more than serviceable. Attractive enough graphics, sturdy cardboard, the plastic trays are just a tad flimsy, but hold the figures very well. Of note is that wonderful Japanese habit of making the packaging collector friendly by allowing you to open and replace the figures without destroying the packaging. Inside you’ll find a baseball card size, um, card with some stats on the [...]

For years now, Minimates have been cranking out highly articulated, super deformed mini figs based on a number of different properties. I believe the longest running line has been the Marvel Comics offerings and can range from being based on the comics to cartoons to movies to video games. It seems there is no end to the possible variations Minimates can (and will) put out based on your favorite Marvel characters. One of those characters is Thor. Thanks to the Thor movie a few years back, we got a number of waves featuring different characters from the Thor universe. Thor, in and of himself, is a pretty iconic and ridiculous character. He’s mythological, alien, viking, and Shakespearian tragedy all rolled into on package and Marvel has made him a central character in their universe. A mainstay of the Avengers and fairly popular with the comic reading crowd, thanks to the Marvel movies, Thor has entered into mainstream awareness. I like Thor. I like the silliness of the character. I like that he talks funny and is larger than life. I like the weirdness of the Thor world. You take a guy and put him in a winged helmet, tights, [...]

Man. Bot. Well played ebay dude, well played. Anyway, you all already know this thing sucks. Heck, we knew this thing sucked when we were 4 in 1982. That’s not the point. The point is I got screwed and I need to share my pain. This [...]

Today we’re checking out B.A. Baracus, from Jazware’s A-Team (modern) movie. So how’s the figure hold up? Well, he’s not Mr. T, that’s for sure. But, it’s not a bad looking figure. Taking a look at the head, they try to capture the look that Mr. T had with the mohawk and facial hair. The paint’s pretty good, but the eyes are a bit off. The painting is screwed up, but I actually think the mold is a little wacky, it looks like he took a cross to the left eye a bit. The eyebrows are a bit off, as well, which doesn’t help the look. Going down to the chest, the necklaces are replaced by dogtags, and vest is replaced by a yellow shirt. A double holster is molded in, with guns resting on his sides, which interferes with the arms’ neutral pose. The chest is an okay mold, but looks a touch flat and wide. The shirt has wrinkles and folds to give it some depth, and the dog tags are sculpted. The paint’s pretty good, but the shirt does have chipping on it, which is disappointing. Bare arms have a tattoo on both biceps, and a band [...]

Welcome back to another review on CardedHeroes! Today we take a look at “Azreal Batman” from DC Universe Classics’ line. Mattel struck gold with the DC Universe Classics figures, they were well recepted and over the years have been able to post quite a library of characters, from mainstream to fringe characters. Now that they’ve gone to the subscription service/Matty Collector model of selling, figures and variety are limited, but the characters are varied. Before the jump to online only, one of the few last waves of figures had a great assortment of figures, with a great build-a-figure Bane, one of which was Azreal as Batman. Off of the bat (sorry for the pun, it may not be the last), this Batman really branches out his look from his popular tights and cape look. The head has a more knight-like look, with a red visor instead of the normal eyeholes. I like it, it looks slick against the metallic blue of the helmet. The mouth is covered, while the helmet has mandibles going down the sides of the face. A red light/camera thing rests on her left side of the forehead, and the famous ears are there to keep the [...]

This Friday, we take a look at Rosie, from the Jetsons, brought to us by Jazwares… Let me just preface this by saying I know what I was getting into, seeing the mold. But still… I was a fan of the Jetson’s cartoon growing up, nearly all the Hanna-Barbera cartoons. So when Jazwares released several of the characters from the Hanna Barbera, I knew I was picking up some, and for some reason, I picked Rosie the maid from The Jetsons as my first piece. Why? It’s kind of hilarious that they made Rosie, that’s why. Okay, I have to say that Jazwares REALLY nailed the look of Rosie. You have the simplistic design that was in the cartoon years and years ago, making sure they got every part of her look. Her cylinder head is two toned, with head on the lighter blue, and her sides a darker blue for shading. A tiara-hat thing rests on top, nicely sculpted. Unfortunately, sloppy paint kind of ruins the sculpt, as the light blue bled up to the hat, and white overflowed onto the head. Antennae stick out from the sides of her head, a nice thickness with red tips. The antennae feel [...]

Okay, we’re going off the grid a bit on this one. We’re gonna take a look at some knock-off lego sets direct from China. The company that put these particular sets out is called Sluban and I imported them via the nifty site a2ztoystore.com , they feature building block sets, transformers, and super hero toys with a distinctly asian flavor. We’ll have a look at some of the wackier offerings soon, but this time around we’re gonna look at some military-esque sets that have more than a slight resemblance to vehicles from a certain evil terrorist organization and some real american heroes. Packaging is about what you’d expect, that is to say cheap. Flimsy cardboard outer box with a cardboard tray containing plastic bags filled with the pieces. Some decent pictures of the sets featured on the box and writing I cannot decipher, so I have no idea what the set is actually called. On the back is a picture of a cross section of a small child’s head with lines pointing to various sections of his brain. I like to think it is showing the specific areas of the brain the high lead content will attack, but that seems a [...]

So, anyone that had been following Battle Beast-related news certainly heard about Beast Saga, the Japanese line that has a dice game (that no one cares about) that really tried to capture the vintage look of the Battle Beasts line. Let’s take a look at BS01, a starter set. I admit, I was REALLY looking forward to this toy line. Over on Moderately Geeky, our podcast, I talked them up quite a bit early on. I wasn’t crazy big into the line when I was a kid, but I had a quite a few, and I liked the absolute randomness of the original line. And as of late, there seemed to be a monster resurgence of the line, whether it be a direct Battle Beast Line, or lines that gave homage to the original. But the line that looked the most like the original line was Beast Saga, who really captured that crazy armored animal look. Well, they captured the look…a little too well. And then they added a dice game. Eck. These figures came in multiple ways, single packed, blind packed, or triple packed sold as “starter packs”, which is what we’re looking at today. I have no idea [...]

The world of Lego comes to CardedHeroes, as we take a look at the new 2013 line of Chima, a bizarre animal anthropomorphic characters and animal-themed vehicles. So let’s take a look at set 70000, Razcal’s Glider… On a whim, I picked up the smallest set of Lego’s new line, Chima. As my buddy Jason said, this line has a figure that looks a LOT like Thundercats, they remind me a lot of Battle Beasts, so I had interest in the series anyways. Razcal’s Glider set was the smallest box set (there are poly bag sets that are smaller, and will do a review on one that I got soon), having only 109 pieces and one mini-figure. I found it kind of odd that the set had multiple instruction manuals as small as it is. Let’s look at the mini-figure first. This was, of course, my main interest, as an action figure fan first and foremost. The core figure is a black and purple figure, with the chest print having gray straps and pouches, with a blue gem in the center of his chest (nod to the old Battle Beasts, maybe?). His head is two sided, a more focused if [...]

Starting off the week at CardedHeroes, we’re going to take a look at a repaint of the ever elusive Armovor from Onell Designs. Onell Designs has a pretty good thing going with his Glyos system of action figures built of reconfigurable parts. Like a Lego figure only in being a building figure, these Glyos figures have a much more organic feel to the parts, which result in some interesting builds. What’s great about this private toy line, is that it’s spawned sister private toy lines in Callgrim, Banimon, The FourHorsemen’s Outer Space Men, and a particular favorite of mine, Spy Monkey Creations, but those are reviews for another day. Back in the summer, Onell released a surprise figure with one of their “Drops” (the release of certain color repaints, or “color ways”), a small, “Battle Beast” type of figure that sold out pretty quickly, and has been doing so with every color way since. With each release so far, you’re getting the same figure in different colors, so this review can be representative of any of the releases to date. What you notice about the figure is that it’s a nice bulky figure. The body from head to toe is [...]
